Join an eco-tour of the Mount Royal precinct of Barrington Tops.

Join a guided walk in Mount Royal National Park on the south western side of Barrington Tops. These walks are led by Callicoma Hill Eco-cabins and are eco-certified by Ecotourism Australia and licensed by NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service.

  • Half-day afternoon nature walk
    Medium grade; return distance 6 km; climb 150 metres mostly on tracks
    Walk for approx 2 hours through tall eucalypt forests and rainforests and climb Pieries Peak with spectacular views to the mountains and valleys of the Barrington Wilderness Area. Observe nature with the chance of seeing rare pademelons and potoroos. Minor rock scrambling.
    When: Sunday 21 March 2021 1:00pm – 4:00pm
  • Half-day morning fitness walk
    Medium-hard grade; return distance 8 km; climb 300 metres partly on tracks & road
    An energetic 2 – 3 hour circular walk on Pieries Peak in tall eucalypt forests and rainforests. Climb a peak with spectacular views to Newcastle and the Barrington Wilderness Area. Enjoy fresh mountain air and a variety of walking surfaces, including a steep incline and minor rock scrambling. Great practice for a multi-day walk adventure. Not suitable for children under 10.

  • Half-day school holiday family walk
    Easy to medium grade; return distance 4-8 km; climb 100 metres on tracks
    2 hour return walk on Youngs Trail suitable for families with children. Walk through and learn about the tall, moist forests and amazing animals that live in the southern limit of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area.

  • Half-day school holiday introductory/family walk
    Easy to medium grade; return distance 4-8 km; climb 100 metres on tracks
    2 – 3 hour walk on Youngs Trail explaining bushwalking basics, including what to take, navigation, wildlife, and what to do if you get lost. Walk through, and learn about the landscape history and wildlife of world heritage listed Mount Royal and Barrington Tops National Parks.

  • Morning history walk in the footsteps of Ludwig Leichhardt
    Hard grade, return distance 8 km, climb 300 metres partly off tracks
    A steep 4 hour morning walk up Mount Royal following in the footsteps of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt who visited this area in 1843. Learn about natural history and hear Leichhardt’s journal descriptions of this area from your leader’s extensive research. Reasonable fitness required. Some minor rock scrambling. Children must be over 12 years and interested in the historical focus of this special walk. For the less adventurous, join the afternoon walk up Mt Royal (separate booking).

Learn about natural history and hear Leichhardt’s journal descriptions of this area from your leader’s extensive research. Reasonable fitness required. Children must be over 12 years and interested in the historical focus of this special walk. For the more adventurous, join the morning walk up Mt Royal (separate booking).

  • Evening spotlight nature walk
    Easy to medium grade; return distance 2 – 4 km; climb 100 metres on tracks
    Easy to medium grade 1.5 hour night walk along Youngs Trail to find rare nocturnal animals such as Greater Gliders, possums, potoroos and pademelons in their natural forest habitat. Marvel at twinkling stars, dark sky and the wonder of sounds of the bush at night. Children need to be over 8 years old, and capable of being very quiet for an extended time.

    Easy to medium grade; return distance 4 – 8 km; climb 100 metres on tracks
