The promise of strong winds and slippery roads didn’t deter visitors heading to the highest point of the Barrington Coast on the weekend.
Fresh snowfall was the big attraction and it started falling in Barrington Tops last Friday and continued intermittently over the weekend. Snow chasers found plenty of snow and a few were lucky to be at Polblue at just the right time for a snow-perfect photo. (Photo at Polblue by Jane Sneddon 11/8/19)
A second weather front on Sunday afternoon brought a bigger dump of snow which resulted in temporary road closures around Barrington Tops.
The latest update (12 Aug 2019) from National Parks advises that 10cm of new snow fell on Sunday evening around Polblue:
- Barrington Tops Forest Road is open for four-wheel drive vehicles only.
- Do not attempt this road in two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicles between the Dingo Gate (Scone side) and Honeysuckle gate (Gloucester side). These vehicles can reach Honeysuckle picnic area (Gloucester side) where there is plenty of snow to see.
- All visitors should slow down, use gears to assist braking and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
- Thunderbolts Way is now open for all traffic heading to Walcha, Armidale and Queensland, with plenty of roadside snow to see.
